Who We Are

Hockey, Bier & Good People

The HSG Gekkos are the ice hockey club of the Universität St. Gallen (HSG) — one of Europe's top business schools. We were founded in 2007 by a handful of students who decided that the best way to de-stress between finance lectures was to strap on some skates and hit the ice.

Seventeen years later, we're 40+ players strong, with tournament titles across Switzerland and a reputation for playing just as hard off the ice as we do on it.

We welcome players of all skill levels — from complete beginners who've never skated before, to experienced players looking for a competitive but friendly environment. What unites us is the love of the game, the HSG spirit, and a certain affinity for dollar signs.

The Free Beer Game

Once per semester, we throw open the rink doors and invite every student at HSG to come watch us play — for free, with complimentary beer included. No ticket price, no dress code: just show up with your student card, grab a cold one, and cheer.

The Free Beer Game is our biggest event of the year. It's part marketing genius, part genuine hospitality — because the Gekkos believe every student deserves a great night out. Past games have drawn crowds of 200+ students and turned plenty of spectators into new team members.

Our Journey

A History of Winning

From a group of finance students with hockey dreams to one of Switzerland's finest student clubs.

2007

Founded by five HSG students who named the team after Gordon Gekko — the iconic Wall Street character — as a nod to the school's business culture.

2009

First entry into the Swiss Student Hockey League. Finished 3rd in our debut season — a result that sparked serious competitive ambitions.

2011

Introduced the Free Beer Game tradition. The first edition attracted 80 students and has grown every semester since.

2015

First major tournament win — the Inter-University Cup in Bern. The team returned heroes and the squad doubled in size the following semester.

2018–2020

Three more tournament titles in three years, including back-to-back HSG Uni Cup victories. The Gekkos become a feared name in Swiss student hockey.

2023

40+ active players, new team kit drop, and our most successful Free Beer Game ever — over 250 students attended. Future is looking green and gold.
